Ecological awareness at Mas de la Fargassa

Mas de la Fargassa is located in a “natural zone”, a protected natural area. Our valley will be closed to day visitors from summer 2022 and only accessible to the inhabitants of the valley and our camping guests. Leave no traces behind you when you stay in nature, do not disturb nature. We live ecologically conscious at Mas de la Fargassa as much as possible.

We ask you to support and respect our values.

At Mas de la Fargassa we don’t kill animals and only take what we need from nature.

Everything we offer is organic; our own fruit and our vegetables from the vegetable garden.

This includes our homemade bread, yogurt, fruit ice lollies and products that we offer in our small shop.

Our meals consist as much as possible of local and organic products and are always vegetarian and increasingly vegan.

At Mas de la Fargassa we are largely self-sufficient:

* In winter we use our own wood from the forest. For this we cut down trees, mostly old dead trees, but also some new plantings when necessary.

We only use what we really need to stay warm enough on cold days…Please be careful with our wood stock in wintertime.

If you like to light a campfire in the evening outside, please collect dead branches in the forest by yourself.

* Our drinking water comes from our beautiful clear river and a 30 meter deep mountain source. The water is filtered and passes a UV lamp, our water is checked regularly and is of perfect drinking quality!! We ask everyone to be economical and aware of their water use.

Do not run taps unnecessarily, take short showers, use our lovely river and beautiful waterfalls in summer as much as possible as a bath.

We also have a compost toilet outside, and a warm outdoor shower by our solar-water-heater for you to use.

* Our electricity is in the daytime generated by our own solar panels on our roof.

Energy is only produced in daylight, we don’t have batteries to stock for nightime. We ask everyone to consciously deal with their electricity consumption.

Do not leave unnecessary light on, take short showers (the water is pumped up and heated by our electric boiler). Use the electrical equipment in our Gîtes in moderation.

At nightime boilers are switched off by means of timers, because we do not produce energy in darkness, so also do not open the refrigerators and do not leave lights on during the nights please, thank you very much!

* At Mas de la Fargassa we have our own waste water cleaning system by means of a grease pit and a septic tank. The septic tank works by means of bacteria.

These will only survive if NO aggressive cleaning agents and washing products are used. (NO CHLORE !!! Use alcohol to disinfect )

Please do not flush away any toilet paper. There is a bin for all paper and burnable packings provided. In the evening we light a fire, you can put your paper on the fire. Please only use biodegradable shampoos, and washing products and no more than necessary.

* We recycle and reuse as much as possible, if things break we try to repair them instead of replacing them immediately.

It is the reason that you will also find old and repaired stuff on Mas de la Fargassa, this is a conscious choice!

With this we try as little as possible to go along in the consumption and disposable society. We buy as much as possible second hand furnitures. We support the emmaus-project.

To recycle and reuse:

At the entrance of the kitchen for all kitchen scraps, there are 3 buckets, one for Compost, one for the goats and one for chickens.

When you go down to Amélie Les Bains please take your rubbish and recycling with you. There are containers on the other side of the main road at the car park for  *Glass *Plastics, Tins and Paper/cardboard *Left over rubbish in the brown containers

We are in the process of switching from gas to (solar) electricity as well for cooking. Please use our gas bottles in the meantime conscious.

If you eat with us, we appreciate it if you only serve yourself what will be eaten. We prefer not to throw good food away. Occasional leftovers go to our chickens, goats or compost for our garden.

Please use your car as little as possible during your stay with us.
